Mitos mágicos de México
Curriculum Ideas

Introduction
The stories in this unit are tales of fantasy and magic from different regions of Mexico. In "El Chichtli" (adapted from a folktale from Tepotzlán), the main character is spirit who takes on the form of a young boy. In  "El perezoso dichoso", a lazy young boy is able to turn ashes into treasure through a series of seemingly magical events. In "Porque el perro mueve su cola", we learn why dogs wag their tails instead of talking. The main themes that might be explored in a curriculum unit linked to these tales are: "why" stories (stories that explain a natural phenomenon or the origin of something), magic, fantasy, luck, and Mexico (geography, peoples, etc.).

Culminating activity suggestions:

  • Have students create their own myths.
  • Ask students to find myths from their own culture or on the internet.
  • Encourage students to share their stories with the class, other classes or members of the community. They might create a picturebook, record the story on audio or videotape, write and perform a play or paint a mural.
